CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

HE WAS ON A TRIP down memory lane, while at the same time on a bit of a drinking binge now. Why then would he not combine the two, and end up at the one bar that could give him both?

Maggie remembered The Tombs in all its glory. It was a small pub, over eighty years old, built primarily for the rowing community that used the Potomac back in the early days, and it had never surrendered its history. Over the entryway were two crisscrossed oars, and if the place was still the same now, hung over the entire circumference of the main bar there would be rows and rows of beer pitchers.

The place was built solid, with a black metal stairway that went down below street level. Once inside you were enveloped in the warmth of the architecture, the walls all made of brick a Cherrywood, the bar carved from solid oak.

It had a small dance floor, which like the bar was built for intimacy. On any given night, it would be packed with college students and twenty-somethings, the DJ hidden in the far back corner, in Maggie’s day spinning Rihanna and Plain White-T’s songs. She had spent many a night there, hanging with friends, tempting the boys with what they couldn’t have, and socializing until the traditional closing song hummed into the air.

She could remember that song to this day: “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison.

She never knew the meaning of the ritual, but it was always the last song played for the night, no matter what night you went. She thought it must have a special meaning to someone, most likely the owner. Whatever the case, it was a signature moment to hear the opening strings and watch the crowded bar erupt in cheers. It was a brotherhood and a sisterhood borne of youth, beer and tequila.

Now it was something new, a place from the past haunted by a ghost who had just descended into its midst for a drink to accompany his murderous thoughts.

Once she made her way to the Key Bridge it was easy. She could get the rest of the way there with her eyes closed. Because she had once loved it there, too.

He’s ruining everything, she thought, even my memories.

It was as if his level of crime and the degree of his trespasses were only getting worse, more invasive and more personal.

She made a hard left at the end of the off ramp, heading off along the road that ran adjacent to the Potomac shoreline, into the neighborhood beyond, rolling through the intersections with stop signs after only the briefest touch of the brake pedal. She made a right onto a small side street, and then accelerated to the next corner of Thirty-Sixth Street, where she saw the familiar blue and white Tombs sign hanging on the building up ahead. Finding a space on the street, she squeezed into it.

Across the street was a parking lot, the attendant standing by a booth next to the driveway, his white shirt and black vest fitting tight against his body.
